Exactly what is Self Motivation? Just an opinion here: Self Motivation starts in the mind. We think and imagine in pictures. Thus, we use success motivation terms like “laser focused”, “vision driven”, “see yourself doing it” and many others. We read self motivation articles and self motivation books to learn others’ views on the subject. In the end, however we simply just decide to do or not to do something. So, it’s a decision, isn’t it?.
It’s simply choosing to do teleological tasks….tasks that take us toward a goal that we have. We all know that nothing happens until something moves. Being still may be relaxing, peaceful, and enjoyable. Stillness, however, results in internal results. As business professionals, we need to have external results as well. Therefore, we need to get moving; get stuff done, move on, or, as Nike says: Just Do It! We almost always say to ourselves: “OK, I’m gonna do it, and…just what specifically do I need to do?” My goal with this simple article is to give you a few tips as to how you might motivate yourself to act on those things that will make you healthier in every way.
Let’s start with an old poem by Berton Bailey:
“The Will to Win”
If you want a thing bad enough
To go out and fight for it,
Work day and night for it,
Give up your time and your peace and
your sleep for it;
If only desire of it
Makes you quite mad enough
Never to tire of it,
Makes you hold all other things tawdry
and cheap for it
If life seems all empty and useless without it and all that you scheme and you dream is about it,
If gladly you’ll sweat for it,
Fret for it, Plan for it,
Lose all your terror of god or man for it,
If you’ll simply go after that thing that you want.
With all your capacity,
Strength and sagacity,
Faith, hope and confidence, stern pertinacity,
If neither cold poverty, famished and gaunt,
Nor sickness nor pain of body or brain
Can turn you away from the thing that you want,
If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,
You’ll get it!
Well, are you motivated now? It’s a great poem for a shot in arm of self motivation. It does not, however help us move consistently toward our goal until we answer this most important question: “What is it, that thing that you want?” The root of self motivation which creates consistent movement toward our objective is to see that objective, goal, purpose very clearly. It’s lack of clarity in our goals that hinder self motivation. Either that, or just plain ol’ fashioned laziness.
What is it, that thing that you want? Is it popularity? Prestige? Fame? Riches? Happiness? That really beautiful woman…or man? What is it? That depends on how well you know yourself. A foggy picture of the self will lead to a foggy life just hovering. No real purpose. Nothing concrete to strive for. If you want to know what it is that you want, look within. Self motivation is not “out there”. That’s called “getting ahead” or “keeping up with the Jonses.” I ask: “getting ahead of what?” “Keeping up with who (or is it whom?” Comparison is the evil seed of doubt, right?
We find our self motivation completely within. As you follow us here at Verona School, you will find valuable content to help you “self-motivate.” There is available a plethora of information regarding self motivation and I find that most of that information is ineffective. It sounds and looks good. It gives us a thrill. But it does not work. After “the thrill is gone and the honeymoon is over” with master motivation, the organized thought, planning and self-discipline begin. So, here’s my little secret:
Determine something you want to accomplish (start with small tasks) and take some action…move! Energy begins to swirl, creating a bit of attraction for like minded energy. When you move your body, your brain will follow. You must re-train your comfort-seeking brain to be just a bit uncomfortable. Then, your brain starts to get comfortable with your discomfort and it supports your goal directed. Do it again the next day and the next. You want to be self-motivated? Set a goal, move a bit toward it, do it for 21 days and you will earn the support of your brain…your mind! After all is said and done, success in any endeavor is all in the mind. That’s where you live. We cope with the external world but we live in our minds.
OK… I get it. You are probably thinking that I’m just nuts; old-fashioned, a bit crazy maybe? Yep, all of those. Guess what, I’m happy. Truly content. Here I am at Seventy Three years old building my first website Whodathunkit? Thanks to Wealthy Affiliate for allowing me this chance. Back to you and your goals.
Here’s how you find “that thing that you want”. Get alone in a room or a place where you can go within for 10 to 15 minutes. Lay down or sit comfortably. Take some deep cleansing breaths. Close your eyes and see yourself in your healing forest. It’s in your brain, right behind your eyes. Create a childhood hero in your forest. Ask the hero: What is it in my whole life that really matters? Things will come up. Just accept everything. You will hear and see something that will give you guidance into “that thing that you want.” It’s really that simple. Do it a few times over a week or so. You will gain what I call “imaginary clarity” on what it is that is important to you. Form your goals, objectives, indeed current purpose around what you observe in your healing forest. Then, be grateful. Give thanks to The Divine Energy.” we are all a part of that after all.
So, might you read this post again. There is power in simplicity, clarity, and directed movement. It’s all in your mind.
There will be more “Encovery” posts as time goes on. I welcome your comments, questions, and just plain ol’ feedback.
