Sometime in September, 2011, I heard the heavy metal door as it was slammed shut yet again. This time was different. A young man with red curly hair threw his bag on the bunk above me. He was crying. As an older inmate with three sons of my own, I extended my hand to shake his and said: “Hi, I’m Larry, welcome to dorm 31….you OK? He said: “I don’t think so”, climbed up on his bunk and gently sobbed himself to sleep. I knew he was new to prison life. Inmates don’t cry. It hit me hard because here I was, doing time. Mine was almost over, his had just begun. I was sad. I fell asleep asking myself: “Why is this boy here? How did I get here? How can I never come back?”
That was the real beginning of the development of my free braintraining games. I started a quest to look deep within and find out what there was about my brain, my mind, my thinking and actions that landed me in prison. I call this process Encovery. Why? Encephalographic Unvovery. It started as I imagined childhood heros like Superman, Mighty Mouse, and Wonder Woman in a forest inside my mind. They were powerful. Maybe they could help me figure out the reasons I stole peoples money.
Little was I to know, that prior to my leaving prison in 2013, Encovery would become a highly sought after “game” by fellow inmates. So much so, that my “bunkie” Rob the redhead said: :This is the best brain training program in the world.” Yep, Rob…my bunkie with curly red hair. Remember him? Rob was a young stock broker who took clients for $25 Million. He was a student of Encovery right along with me. I think Encovery saved both our lives. Eventually, we had over 30 inmates practicing Encovery. We had to keep it on the downlow. None of the guards would ever believe us. None of us have ever gone back to prison nor induldged in any criminal activity. Pretty cool, huh? remember, the recidivism rate in California is over 80%. I figure if it will work for ex-cons, it just might work for frustrated marketers.
So…What Is Encovery?
Encovery is a “mind game” that we play on ourselves. We use our imagination coupled with memory observation. We call upon the creative side of our brain to observe the memory side of our brain objectively. When emotions come up in the process, we “watch” them …as an observer. As I mentioned in a previous post, the process somehow causes the “neurotic” (also imagined) part of our “emotional drivers” to disappear. That simple process allows our behavior to be driven by logic rather than emotion. As a student of neuroscience, I’m still trying to figure it out. I know one thing: It works!
Here’s How Encovery Works
We are frightened by approaches to brain training that we do not understand. I had nothing to lose, however. I was in Prison. I just decided to change. Encovery allowed me that opprtunity by looking closely at my “emotional drivers” that led to criminal activity. When I saw them, looked at them with the help of Superman and MightMouse, we all ended up laughing. Observation uncovered emotions. Upon seeing those emotions as root causes of some behaviors that hurt others, I decided to “call them out”. How? Observation took them out of the unconscious trigger mode into a conscious reasoning mode. During Encovery, we (my heros, my emotional triggers and my observational consciousness) agreed that emotions, even long forgotten ones, would step aside and allow my logical brain to drive my behavior. It sounds simple and it is.
Go to a quiet place. A prison bunk works just fine. You may have to go to a room somewhere or close your office door. Take a few deep breaths and relax. You can lay supine or sit in a chair with your hands on your thighs.
Close your eyes. Imagine a forest…it’s in your brain, right behind your eyes.
Create peace and tranquility there.
Create an imaginary childhood hero or two….take a few minutes and just observe him/her
Think of something you’ve done that you need help to understand
Ask the hero: “What was I feeling when I did ___________?
Just be quiet, listen, observe what is said.
Ask: “Will you now take me to visit that feeling?” Your hero will introcuce you to that feeling.
Give the feeling a size, shape, color, weight and watch it as it moves; bring it into the physical world; observe it
Repeat that process two or three times.
Allow the feeling to lose it’s size, weight, color….you won’t be able to see it. Give it time, it will disappear
Thank your hero for coming with you, go back to your forest, take a few deep breaths, move your hands, open your eyes and realize that you will come back soon to your forest
Every emotion that causes behavior that goes against your conscience is a mirage. When you observe it, it must come into the physical world. Just like a mirage in the desert, when closely observed, it disappears.
Encovery: Non-judgmental Observation
When I first discovered Encovery, I did not believe it. So, like a good little retired school teacher I waited upon my behavior to bear it out. Funny…the more I played the Encovery brain game, the freer I felt. I found other applications too. I learned that some of my health issues were actually emotionally driven. I looked at stress. I looked at emotion driven headaches and muscle pain. I recognized anger, guilt, fear, worry, greed and pride to be emotions that lost their power. I still felt them but they shot blanks. Nothing. Logical thinking took over my decision making process as it will for you. Don’t be surprised if little psychosomatic crap disappears. Bye bye impulsive, hurtful behavior. You will not lose your spontaneity or creativity. You just won’t be a slave to your feelings any more. You body will love you, too. Free at last!
Encovery and The Marketer
This is just a beginning introduction to Encovery. Stick with me here. On future posts I will give you other applications for Encovery. There will be actuall videos where we will do the processes together. For now, let’s look at marketing. Marketing is work. Sometimes it’s boring work. It seems complex much of the time. You can and must do it. As you practice Encovery and ask your childhood heroes why you are NOT taking the action you know you want to, he/she will reveal to you the emotional drivers for your inaction. After observation, those emotional drivers to “not doing anything” will disappear. I believe that the enemy to success is within. We don’t deal with that enemy because we cannot see him. We cannot see him because emotional causes for actions are unconscious. So, uncover the little brat. You will be free to do any tasks when the emotional reward for not doing them is gone. More later.
